The Event: The USSA Masters Summer Fun Nationals is a sanctioned USSA masters level event for ski racers from 18-80+ years old and their youth children. All race on World Cup type courses to USSA Masters specifications in five-year age classes for both men and women. The field consists of racers who are USSA Alpine Masters members, who come from all across the US, Canada, and a few other countries.

The event was initiated by three friends who were USSA Masters and lived at Mt Hood who wanted to share this unique and fun filled mountain with their winter ski racing friends. Those who love ski racing as a life-long passion, want others to be able to share that passion. In 1989, they hosted the first event, Summer Fun Race, where everyone enjoyed warm, sunny weather combined with ski racing. It proved a lot of fun for many who had considered ski racing a winter sport. It quickly became popular, attracting racers from all across the US and several other countries. It soon took on the USSA status of Masters Summer Fun Nationals and now consists of Giant Slalom on Saturday and Slalom on Sunday.

The event has grown to its current size averaging 120-150 racers each summer. The racers bring family and friends and make a vacation of their trip to Mt Hood. They usually arrive a week prior to the event for training at a "race camp". The event gives them the opportunity to be competitive, socialize with friends, and re-educate their muscles half way between last season and next. The event is supported by about 30-40 volunteers who are both racers and non racers to make the event successful each year.

In addition to the first, second and third place awards for racers in each of their respective five-year age classes and youth classes, the special awards have become a competitive tradition, as well. The Bob Skoch Memorial award is for the first place winner for each class by combining Slalom and Giant Slalom race results.

The PUTZI Cup is for the fastest slalom times for a man and a woman. The Atomic skier of the year award is a coveted award for contribution to Masters ski racing. New is the fastest parent/child team award. Saturday afternoon there is a BBQ at Timberline, where racers socialize, compare the day's adventures, as well as trying their luck at the raffles, silent auction, "toss out items" and various awards ceremonies.

The Sponsorship Opportunities: Sponsorship opportunities are available for presentation of products to adult ski racers with disposable income who are sports oriented, travel extensively, like adrenaline rushes, purchase quality products and are well educated and business oriented. These opportunities are varied and are open for discussion with event management. Suggestions include: T-shirts, 2 days of awards, the parties (welcome, BBQ, or Sunday awards), gate panels, bibs, flagging, banners, items for raffle, toss out, silent auction, welcome bag items (given to each racer and course worker), or other suggestions from you. Your banners and products may be displayed on the race hill as well as at the parties. In addition to the racers, there is visibility by athletes, coaches, teams currently training at Mt Hood that number ~2000 per day.

If you have any photos from past race years or would like to submit a testimonial for possible inclusion,
